Brisbane is undergoing an extraordinary transformation with a run of major infrastructure projects underway ensuring its status as a world-class city. These developments will not only prepare the city for its growing population but also ensure it shines as the host city for the 2032 Olympics. When these projects are completed, Brisbane will be a more connected city, have improved transport networks and exciting new places for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Let’s investigate some of the incredible projects that are underway…
1. Brisbane Metro – will provide high frequency rapid transport along 21km of existing busway between the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Eight Mile Plains. The project will include 18 stations, two of which will link to Cross River Rail stations. It is expected to be completed in 2023 at a cost of $1.2 billion.
2. Cross River Rail – this project will transform Brisbane’s rail network and involves the construction of a new underground rail line that will pass through the heart of the city. The Cross River Rail aims to alleviate congestion and provide 10km of seamless travel from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills. Six kilometres of this new rail line will be twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and CBD.

3. Queen’s Wharf – this $3.6 billion flagship project involves construction of a world-class resort and casino complex, apartments, retail stores, restaurants, entertainment facilities and bridge connecting Queen’s Wharf to South Bank. Situated on the river in the CBD area, Queens Wharf will be an exciting destination for locals and visitors to experience. 4. Woolloongabba Revitalisation – A $7 billion project is underway to transform the Woolloongabba precinct into a vibrant neighbourhood with more parks, a thriving high street, world-class events, more apartment housing, more dining options, and easy cycling and walking options to South Bank and the CBD. The Gabba stadium will be rebuilt and will be the focal point of the revitalisation. The new Gabba stadium will also be a connecting point for the Cross River Rail and the Brisbane Metro.
5. Green Bridges Program – four new bridges are being built across Brisbane to make it easier to get around by foot, riding, or by connecting with public transport. The four new bridges will connect the following areas:
-
- Kangaroo Point to the CBD
- Breakfast Creek and the inner city
- Toowong to West End
- St Lucia to West End
These important infrastructure projects underpin Brisbane’s commitment to progress and improved quality of life for residents and visitors. Time Magazine recently proclaimed Brisbane as one of the greatest cities in the world. This major makeover of Brisbane will make the city even greater and ensure Brisbane maintains its position a world-class city.
